Reporting Matters: Why Your Calls Still Count

At this week’s Chamber Coffee Connect with Port Alberni RCMP, members shared concerns about shoplifting, loitering, public drug use, and safety near their businesses. One common question came up:
“We call non-emergency, but no one shows up. Does reporting really matter?”

The clear answer from Insp Bruce, S/Sgt Merrick and Sgt Archer was yes, it does.

Even when an officer can’t attend every non-emergency call, every report is recorded. These reports are logged and tracked by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to help identify repeat locations, patterns, and problem times. Over time, this information helps decide where patrols go and how resources are used.

One call alone may not bring an immediate response. But many reports from many businesses in the same area make a real difference.

Reporting is especially helpful when you can also provide:

  • Photos or video
  • Descriptions of what happened
  • Witness statements
  • Dates and times of incidents

Simple tips to help prevent issues:

  • Improve lighting around entrances and alleys
  • Keep high-value items visible from the counter
  • Reduce blind spots in your store layout
  • Keep doors, windows, and sightlines clear

You can also call the RCMP non-emergency line and ask for a crime prevention walkthrough. Officers can visit your business and offer practical safety advice (when they are available).

Some crimes can also be reported online:

Key takeaway for members:

  • If it’s urgent or unsafe: call 911
  • If it’s ongoing but not urgent: call non-emergency
  • Keep reporting — it builds the evidence needed for change

The Chamber will keep sharing information, advocating for members, and creating space for these important discussions. We thank Insp Bruce and her team for connecting with our members and sharing practical insights and tips on making our community safer.
